José Octavio Busto Iñiguez
1935-2023
“An Unceasing Collector”
José Octavio was born in Amandi, a parish in Villaviciosa, Asturias, on an August day in 1935. At the age of 19, he decided to broaden his horizons and emigrated to Santo Domingo, where he spent six years working at the Dominican Shipyards. Despite his young age, he held several important positions there, becoming the youngest assistant to the superintendent of docks.
At the time of his passing, José Octavio still maintained friendships from those early years, which he cherished as part of his life; his time in Santo Domingo left an indelible mark on him.
In 1960, true to his adventurous spirit, he set sail and continued to navigate the seas until 1975, serving as Chief Purser on various cruise ships.
Eventually, the inevitable happened: he fell in love in Puerto Rico with the daughter of Asturians who had long been established on the island. Upon marrying Milagros Alvarez Rodríguez, he ended his years at sea and established a highly successful business representing cruise ships, a venture now managed by his sons Tomás and Kristian.
José Octavio was the quintessential collector. His interests were broad and encompassed various collections of banknotes, coins, works of art, rare books, archaeology, and more, including an exceptionally important collection of Mexican colonial ounces, which he sold privately several years ago.
