Today we introduce you a silver pillar of the highest rarity, the first circular coin with rim milling minted in New Kingdom, that will be auction in our Floor Auction 50, that will be hold on February 5th, 2020 in Gran Meliá Fénix Hotel in Madrid.
The mint of Santa Fe was very productive as far as the golden mintings were concerned. However, the same cannot be said about the silver mintings, which remained scarce. The royal decree published in November 1751 had ordered that the Mint of Santa Fe worked under the crown’s authority. The machinery capable of producing circular coins and fitted with cordoncillo could not start working until 1756, which is when the hammered coinage ended.
The first director, Tomás Sánchez Reziente, was in charge of the remodeling works, while Joaquín Burgos and Victoriano del Valle (JV) were the ones in charge of the testing in this workshop.
It is one of the rarest pieces that we have offered from this mint and it is also the first circular coin with rim milling minted in New Kingdom. It is the only silver minting from Bogota under the name of Ferdinand VI. According to Jorge Emilio Restrepo, we only know of fifteen pieces like this one.
